This is one movie that created quite a ripple with its release as it brought with it something of a challenge and a wake-up call for Christians across the world who had been fighting losing battles in life.
The movie began with a narrative that pretty much sums up the message. Life is full of wars and men have been fighting battles since forever. But we very often ignore the fact that winning battles is more about identifying the right enemy and doing battle with the right strategy and weapons.
Priscilla C. Shirer (as Elizabeth Jordan) takes the lead role as a real estate agent with a stormy marriage that is already quite close to the edge. While on her job and trying to sell a house, Elizabeth meets the elderly widow, Clara Johnson (Karen Abercrombie) who gradually becomes a close friend and teaches her how to fight for her family from the place of prayer. As Elizabeth begins to learn to surrender to God and pray her way through, things began to change for her family. She must however learn to forgive and support her husband through the consequences of his choices.
War room addresses the misconception that the person hurting us is our enemy and that we have a duty to fight them for what we want or for the chance to be right. It turns out, even though Elizabeth appeared to be right and her husband gradually going off the cliff, it wasn’t her place to judge him or bring him back to his senses. It is always God’s place to fix people, not ours.
I thoroughly enjoyed the simple manner in which the movie told the story of God’s grace and forgiveness, while effectively downplaying the notion of self-righteousness that most Christians carry around. Most importantly, the movie highlighted the fact that the believer who would take up their weapons in prayer has great power and authority over any enemy.
It is a good watch and is suitable for families to watch together without age restrictions.
