Whose parameters did you evaluate yourself against to determine whether your year has been a success or a failure? Naomi evaluated herself by what she had lost (Ruth 1). Are you evaluating yourself by the things you are yet to achieve or against the track record of your friends?
Your friends did not create you, your circumstance did not create you and it’s only if you allow it that it can shape you in a negative way.
While Orpah allowed the loss determine her actions, Ruth refused to let the situation shape how she saw herself and her subsequent actions. Where Orpah thought she had lost it all, Ruth knew she had gained something important – a mother-in-law who feared God and an opportunity to know and serve that God.
Thanks to God who never gives up on us! He never gave up on Naomi, even when she called herself ‘bitter.’ In all that loss, God still had a plan; Christ was to come through their lineage!
Will you be like Ruth today and walk by faith, seeing Beauty for ashes, Grace for pain, Success for failure…? It’s time to go back to God and ask Him what his own parameters for your success are.
Stop judging yourself by another man’s script – evaluate your year by God’s script.
