“Mummy, please call me.Urgent!” KK was on his way back to school and he had arrived Heathrow Airport. For some reason through the night I didn’t really sleep. I had his flight on track on my phone screen and I was monitoring its progress by the hour.
I am usually a bit more relaxed when any member of my family is travelling but this particular trip was hard on me. It was hard on me because as far as I was concerned, we didn’t have enough holiday time. It was tough on me because all three of my children were resuming the same day which meant I was going into empty nest again and while that has its blessings, I wasn’t ready this time.
So I tracked his flight through the night. By the time they landed in Heathrow and I spoke to him, I was feeling a bit better. So imagine, 15 minutes after I spoke to him I saw this message on my phone. My heart skipped many beats and I felt the hair on my neck rise in fear. I tried to call him and he wasn’t taking his call. I quickly went to flight tracker to check the status of his next flight. The report said the flight was taxiing away from the gate and then it dawned on me he had missed his connection.
So I called him again and this time, he took the call. I could hear panic in his voice as he said to me, ‘Mummy it seems I have missed my flight… no, I cannot miss my flight. Oh God what will I do?’ As his mother, my heart broke. I wished I had some super power so I could show up at Heathrow and help him through the challenge. But fortunately, I had no such power.
I knew I had to calm him down and had to pray really fast! So I said to him, ‘please calm down and begin to look for a BA information desk. Go to them and tell them you have missed your flight and ask them what you should do…’ As I cut the call, I quickly prayed,
“Father, I have no super powers to materialise at my son’s troubled spot right now, but you are everywhere all the time. I therefore ask that you show up for him, send an angel to that information desk right now and let them first offer him comfort, then a solution in Jesus name.”
A few minutes later, the prayer was answered. They booked him on the very next flight and he was fine again. However, in those few minutes the devil took hold of my thoughts and did his best to suggest to me that he was going to have a hard time getting to his destination. The devil at this point questioned our decision to send him abroad to school and asked why no one accompanied him on the trip. He also suggested that this might just be an indication that he was going to have a really bad second term… all these within those few minutes.
By the time we were done, my legs couldn’t hold me up so I sat on the steps and I just wept. I wept because I missed my children. I wept because even though I knew that leaving home for school was God’s will for him, it was still a stretch of my faith and a pull-away from my comfort zone. I wept because I would rather be on hand to deal with issues such as this for him, but now I couldn’t and I didn’t like that much. I just wept…
In that state I heard God speak to my heart, ‘didn’t I tell you that you were in for adventure this year? Don’t you know that adventure isn’t exactly a party? How will he grow if you keep him sheltered? How will he break ranks into his destiny except he is away from comfort zones and your smother? How?’
Then I calmed down and realised that whether as a homemaker, professional, wife or mother, destiny is about breaking ranks. It is about stepping into things unknown and taking risks. However, regardless of what we face in those situations when we wish we had super powers but all we can find is a prayer, God the Super God has got us in His hands.
He will never leave nor forsake us. He will wait for us when we miss our flights and ensure that we have the right roommate for the season we are in.
Our super God will be there to hold us up even when we feel like we would break. On the adventure to destiny, we do need super powers and access to this power is just a prayer away.
So as you keep your home in 2015, don’t forget that your journey to destiny is an adventure and you will need to step up to take risks to arrive there. Most importantly, don’t forget that our super power is only a prayer away.
May God keep you and your home.
