About fifteen years ago when I got married, I so wanted to be a whole lot more than I was at the time.  I wanted to be a very smartly dressed executive with a big office and I wanted to be able to go out every morning and come back late in the evening, tired from work.  I wanted to feel important; I just wanted to be so much more than I thought I was.

I wanted and craved a life beyond the pots and pans, beyond my immediate neighbourhood. I wanted more than shopping and cooking. I wanted more than washing and ironing.  I wanted more!

I felt that until I did some really smart things and went public then maybe I was just ordinary.  The last thing I wanted to fill in my data forms was HOMEMAKER. Who ever heard of being a Homemaker!  My friends thought I was lazy, others thought I didn’t have anything to offer, and I definitely saw myself as a failure and a waste!  It seemed like all the education my parents struggled to ensure I had was to be wasted helping with homework for tiny people.

Quite a number of us are pretty good at staying on top of the housework and we can be quite efficient at this; however when it comes to keeping our finances in order we are not so savvy.

I believe that orderliness begets wealth. There is no better sign that someone is clueless about what's coming in and going out than by a pile of unfiled bills, invoices, receipts and statements; whether paid or unpaid. When you consciously open, read, and file away your bills and statements, you are connecting with your money and taking control of your life.

It’s important to clean up your finances by getting rid of old paperwork that serves no purpose. Develop a system for keeping your important documents, bills, and statements in an organized manner. Like your home, your financial clutter needs an overhaul every now and again. There is no better time than now!

Whenever I have done something I do not want anyone to know of, I struggle through keeping it secret. Nevertheless, I still panic through the streets and I suspect every stare or glance that seems too sneaky. Over the years, I realised I had piled up so much stuff in my guarded territory that I began to feel the weight. So much to keep away from parents, friends, family and my public.

But for how long will I keep guarding these territories? It often involves the weapons of lies, falsehood and pretence. Its imprisonment is beyond description and its prison walls always need fortification.

Patricia shared her story of how she stayed through school for six months some years back without going home or speaking to friends. She was pregnant for her first boyfriend for four months, struggling through it alone as a first year student in the university and dealing with the fact that they broke up soon after she told him she was pregnant. Her boyfriend graduated two months into the pregnancy and left her a note saying that he was not prepared to be a father. He also left a doctor’s contact for the abortion.  She aborted the pregnancy and kept it secret. After seven years of marriage without children, they went to see a specialist doctor recommended by a church member. It turned out to be the doctor that did the abortion for her. He is now a believer and a deacon in his local church.
